Cookouts in the backyard, pool parties, bike rides, picnics…..nothing says summer like feeling the warm sun on your face. Being outside is one of the best parts of summer. However, with summer comes….mosquitoes. Buzzing, biting, outdoor fun spoiling pests. Don’t let these buzzing pests keep you from enjoying the days of summer. Check out these tips for ridding your yard of biting pests and get back to enjoying your summer days!

-) Dump the water. Mosquitoes love to hangout and breed in standing water. Summer showers can leave ideal spots for mosquitoes to congregate in your yard. Be sure to empty any items that may hold water and fill in any low spots in your yard with sand or dirt to prevent puddles.

-) Consider getting a spray company. There are tons of services that offer specials during the summer to come spray your yard. Ask the pros to check gutters and spray around large bushes as these are great bug hide-outs. Don’t want to spring for a pro? Try a do-it-yourself method with the bug bomb cans that you can find at most outdoor stores. Be sure to follow instructions and keep away from children and pets. For best results, be sure to spray the area several minutes before you plan to use the outdoor area to avoid breathing in the fog directly.

-) Keep up with your yard maintenance. It’s hot outside and cutting the grass and trimming the bushes isn’t exactly on the top of your to-do list. We get it! However, keeping your grass cut and bushes trimmed goes a long way towards keeping pesky, biting bugs at bay. Mosquitoes and other biting things love to hangout in shaded tree areas or tall grass. When you spray your yard, remember to focus on these areas of the yard.

-) Try natural repellants in your landscape. Speaking of the yard, what if your landscape could help keep the bugs away? Try planting citronella plants, marigolds, or peppermint plants. The natural oils that they release deter bugs and also smell great on a patio.

-) Spray, spray, spray again. Remember to keep bug spray handy and reapply frequently. Consider keeping a basket of spray on your porch or deck for easy use for you and your guests. Sprays containing DEET are highly effective, but can cause allergic reactions in some people or in children. If you are allergic to stronger sprays, consider keeping a natural repellant option available as well. If you want to really go natural you can try an essential oil such as tea tree oil or eucalyptus oil to deter biting pests. Be sure to always follow the directions for use and keep away from young children.

-) Strike a light. Light up your deck or porch party with citronella candles or torches. However, be sure to use caution. Keep all flames away from buildings and make sure to keep children supervised when near open flames. Candles should never be used if you are not in the immediate vicinity. If you are looking for another option that doesn’t involve an open flame, check out citronella bracelets or belt clips for active outdoor activities.
